Board of Education

The HPTS Board's role is to oversee and set school policy, hire and work in partnership with the superintendent and oversee the District budget. Regular Board meetings are held once a month on the third Monday at 6:00 p.m. Every Board of Education meeting includes an opportunity for public comment.

Philip "Buck" Foltz portraitPhilip "Buck" Foltz, President

Philip Foltz has served on the Houghton-Portage Township School Board since 1996. He is currently the Board Vice President, chairs the Facilities committee, and serves on the Curriculum and Personnel/Policy committees. Besides positions he has held at BHK and the City of Houghton, he volunteers with many community organizations including: member of Houghton Volunteer Fire Department since 1992, member of the Houghton All-Sports Boosters, serves on the Dee Stadium Locker Room Fundraising Committee, and participated in building an outdoor ice skating facility in West Houghton. He currently attends Michigan Tech University. Foltz and his wife Karen have three children, Mindy who is married, and Tristan and Annika who attend Houghton-Portage Township Schools. Mr. Foltz's Board term expires in December of 2020.

Nels Christopherson PotraitNels Christopherson, Vice President

Nels Christopherson has lived in Houghton for over 35 years, first as a student at MTU and now as a teacher there. He was first elected to the Board in 1991 and is currently the Board Treasurer, chair of the Personnel/Policy committee and serves on the Finance and Negotiations committees. He is also a member of the CCISD Board of Education. He is an enthusiastic supporter of the Gremlins and Houghton, and the Copper Country in general. He enjoys trout fishing, cross country skiing, and especially taking saunas! Dr. Christopherson's Board term expires in December of 2018.

Amanda Massaway PotraitAmanda Massaway, Treasurer

Amanda Massaway was recently appointed to the Board. She currently chairs the Curriculum Committee and serves on the Finance and Community/Student Affairs committees. For the last 15 years, she has worked in various corporate accounting roles for a global retailer and is currently a member of the Houghton Rotary club. Amanda grew up in Northeast Wisconsin and went to college at Indiana University. She and her husband Mike have 4 young children and they enjoy many of the outdoor and youth activities found in the UP. Mrs. Massaway's term will be up for election in November 2018.

Crystal Verran PortraitCrystal Verran, Secretary

Crystal Verran was elected to the Board in May 2010. She is the Board Secretary, chairs the Athletics/Transportation committee and serves on the Community/Student Affairs and Personnel/Policy committees. Crystal works at Michigan Technological University in the marketing and communications department, where she is the director of operations. Prior to serving as the director of operations, Crystal was a graphic designer within the department. She is a former member of the Houghton High School Gremlins All Sports Booster Club. Crystal and her husband, Derrick, have two children, Zachary and Samantha, both graduates of Houghton High School. She enjoys camping, fishing, riding the trails, spending time with family, and watching Michigan Tech athletics and arts events. Mrs. Verran's Board term expires in December of 2020.

Brad Baltensperger portraitBrad Baltensperger, Trustee

Brad Baltensperger has served on the Houghton-Portage Township School Board since 1988. He is currently the Board President, chairs the Negotiations committee and serves on the Athletics/Transportation and Facilities committees. Baltensperger was president of the Michigan Association of School Boards, 1999-2000, and currently serves on the MASB Board of Directors. He also helped establish the Copper Country Association of School Boards. Baltensperger received his education at the University of Nebraska and Clark University. He is a research professor of geography and education at Michigan Technological University. He enjoys cross country skiing, gardening, choral singing

Rob Fay portraitRob Fay, Trustee

Rob Fay was appointed to the Houghton-Portage Township School Board in 2019. He graduated from Michigan Tech in 2002 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering after growing up in the Copper Country. Rob and his wife Lisa live in Portage Township with their three children who currently attend the Houghton schools. He is a Project Manager for a local engineering firm. He enjoys family, sports, and camping. He has been a longtime sports official for the Michigan High School Athletic Association. He has also served on the HPTS Foundation Board and the Portage Lake Little League Board. Mr. Fay's term will be up for election in November 2020.

Robert Wheeler PortraitRobert Wheeler, Trustee

Robert Wheeler has served on the Houghton-Portage Township School Board since 2007. He is chair of the Community/Student Affairs committee, and a member of the Curriculum and Athletics/Transportation committees. Mr. Wheeler is employed as a land survey technician with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He has lived in the Copper Country for over 15 years, and has six children - the two youngest attend Houghton High School. Mr. Wheeler is involved with protecting, investigating and educating the public concerning the ancient archeology sites of the Copper Country. Mr. Wheeler's Board term expires in December of 2022.
